The California state capital building is a great place to go if you want to learn more about the history of California’s government. Opened Monday – Friday From 9 am to 5pm It is closed on weekends but worth a trip if you’re in town during the week.
While the virtual tour is nice, there’s nothing like being inside the building and seeing relics of times past with your own eyes.
1. California State Capitol is Impressive
When walking through the State Capital Park, one starts to see large monuments looming over the expansive green space. Forests of trees separate it from the capital itself until eventually you approach, with massive white and marble columns greeting you. Completed in 1912, it is a beautiful structure comprised with many gilded dome caps.
2. California State Capitol is Full of History
The archives building was built in 1898, so they had to decide how it would be arranged. Clearly a lot of the space would be devoted to preserving the old state offices from previous administrations (fun fact: there are about 10 offices on either side of the rotunda). Therefore, one of the first decisions made involved choosing tall ceilings for their significant height and historical appeal – so high ceilings were definitely worth preserving amidst all the new construction!
3. California State Capitol is Home to California Politics
If you visit the building you’re sure to be taken aback by the beautiful architecture. The frescoing in particular is an impressive display of color and taking pictures is encouraged. One such picture spot that many people enjoy is from the third floor where you can view both the north side chamber and south side chambers where members of Senate or house are meeting and discussing your safety. These rooms are open for public viewing but keep in mind if you happen to become disruptive it will not be tolerated so please remember your manners if you should decide to see what’s going on at this level within a United States Capitol.
4. California State Capitol Helps Put History Together
If you’ve ever had coffee or visited the California State Capitol in Sacramento, you feel a deep sense of pride walking through its majestic halls. And there’s great reason for it: The state we know today as California once was the Wild West and is now home to more than 40 million people – by far the largest (and most powerful) state in our country!
Of course the capitol building is surrounded by a huge beautiful park. The experience at the California State Capitol building and Park will be a pleasure for you. There are many great things to see inside as well as outside. Even if you don’t enjoy history, it’s still worth visiting this fantastic attraction.
